The Shenzhen Zhongshan Cross River Passage, also known as the Shenzhen Zhongshan Passage, is an important transportation infrastructure that connects Shenzhen, Zhongshan, and Nansha District in Guangdong Province, China. The completion and opening up of this world-class cross sea cluster project marks the further improvement of the transportation network in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, and is of great significance for promoting regional economic development and strengthening inter city connectivity.
The total length of the Shenzhong Passage is about 24 kilometers, including a bridge section of about 17 kilometers and an underwater tunnel section of about 6.8 kilometers. Since the start of construction on December 28, 2016, after years of hard work, the project was finally officially completed and opened on June 30, 2024. The design speed of Shenzhen China Channel is 100km/h. The technical standard of two-way 8-lane expressway is adopted, which greatly improves the traffic capacity of both sides of the the Pearl River Estuary.
During the construction process of the Shenzhen Zhongshan Channel, many technical difficulties and challenges are faced. Among them, the construction of underwater tunnels is particularly crucial and complex. As the world's longest and widest steel shell concrete immersed tube tunnel, the deep to medium channel underwater tunnel needs to overcome a series of global challenges in the design and construction process, such as the installation of ultra large immersed tubes and long-distance floating. As the core construction unit, CCCC First Navigation Bureau, a central enterprise stationed in Tianjin, has created more than 170 patents, 8 innovative achievements, and more than 20 world records, filling multiple industry gaps and achieving intelligent construction of cross sea channels.
Shorten traffic time: after the opening of the Shenzhen China Channel, the drive from Shenzhen to Zhongshan will be shortened from nearly two hours to less than 30 minutes, greatly improving the traffic efficiency on both sides of the the Pearl River Estuary.
Promoting regional economic development: The completion and opening of the Shenzhen China Corridor will further promote the integrated development of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area urban agglomeration, benefiting over 86 million people in 11 surrounding cities. It will promote economic exchanges and cooperation between cities such as Shenzhen and Zhongshan, injecting new vitality into regional economic development. For a long time, the traffic on both sides of the the Pearl River Estuary has mainly relied on river crossing channels such as the Humen Bridge, which are often congested during peak hours. The opening of the Shenzhen Zhongshan Channel will effectively alleviate this pressure and provide more convenient choices for residents to travel. The completion and opening of the Shenzhen Zhongshan Corridor will further enhance the comprehensive competitiveness of cities such as Shenzhen and Zhongshan. It will attract more investment and talent to flow into these cities, promoting the upgrading and transformation of urban industries.
