At present, Kent County in England is intensively preparing for the upgrade of the A229 highway, aiming to improve this busy thoroughfare connecting the M2 and M20 highways. The highway is located between the 6th ramp of Medstone M20 highway and the 3rd ramp of Bluebell Mountain M2 highway, and the upgrade project is of great significance.

The current situation of A229 highway is not optimistic. During peak hours, delays often occur due to huge traffic flow, and slow-moving vehicles form long queues, seriously affecting traffic efficiency. With the advancement of the Lower Thames Bridge project, it is urgent to improve the traffic capacity of key sections such as A229, and this upgrade is a key measure to address this demand.

The project budget reached 250 million pounds, an increase from the initial plan of 202 million pounds, with rising material costs being the main reason for the cost increase. However, this investment will bring significant traffic improvement effects. After the upgrade, the project can reduce congestion, shorten driver travel time, and improve the overall efficiency of regional transportation.

At present, this phase of work is expected to last for three months and is managed by the Kent County Council (KCC). Experts from AECOM are conducting surveys on the ground conditions, underground public facilities, and drainage system locations to provide accurate data support for subsequent construction. Meanwhile, the project party has submitted a bid to become part of the UK Department for Transport's (DfT) Major Road Network Funding Scheme, which aims to fund large-scale local transportation projects that are difficult to obtain funding through conventional channels.

In terms of upgrading content, the main Lise roundabout and the ramp from Mount Lambert to Maidstone will be optimized; Build a new independent left turn lane between M2 London direction and Tardington Roundabout; The existing A229 Medstone direction connection section will be widened to three lanes between the main Lis roundabout and the Cobb Tree roundabout.

The entire project will be carried out in multiple stages, with the main construction scheduled for 2028 and the final project expected to be completed by 2031, before the opening of the lower Thames Bridge. I believe that with the gradual progress of the project, the A229 highway will be revitalized, bringing more convenient and efficient travel experiences to local residents and passing drivers, and helping to achieve new development in regional transportation and economy.Editor/Cheng Liting
