Türkiye has the natural advantage of developing photovoltaic industry with its abundant sunshine and vast desert. In order to make full use of this "right time and right place", the government of Türkiye has actively formulated a number of policies and plans aimed at significantly increasing the proportion of renewable energy in the energy structure. These efforts have achieved remarkable results - according to the data of Türkiye Electric Power Transmission Company on September 25, 2025, photovoltaic power generation accounted for 24% of the total power generation in the country on that day, and has become a pillar force in its renewable energy portfolio.

This high proportion shows the immediate influence of photovoltaic in Türkiye's energy system. From a longer-term perspective, according to World Bank data, the contribution of photovoltaics to the total electricity generation in 2024 has reached 7.51%, establishing its important position.

Goal ahead, installation growth far exceeds expectations

The government of Türkiye has set a clear road map for photovoltaic development. According to the National Energy Plan (NEP) released by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MENR) in 2022, the goal is to achieve 17.9 gigawatts (GW) of solar installed capacity by 2025 to promote energy structure transformation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

However, the expansion speed of the market far exceeds the government's expectations. In 2024, Türkiye's solar energy market will achieve an amazing leap, with the newly added installed capacity surging 394% to 8.5GW from 1.7GW in 2023. This explosive growth will make the country's total installed capacity break through 19GW at the end of 2024, which will not only double the previous year, but also overfulfil the target set for 2025 a year and a half ahead of schedule.

The future is promising, and there is enormous potential for industrial synergy

This achievement is attributed to government supportive policies such as YEKDEM and favorable regulatory reforms. At the same time, the strong growth in demand has also driven the progress of local manufacturing industry, and a stable domestic solar energy manufacturing base is forming.

In the face of the development momentum far exceeding expectations, the Türkiye government is also constantly raising its long-term goals. In the climate change strategy document released in November 2024, the photovoltaic installed capacity target for 2035 was set at 77GW, which is a significant increase of 45% compared to the 52.9GW target in the 2022 NEP document. No matter which guidance document is referred to, there is no doubt that Türkiye's photovoltaic market has huge development space. Looking ahead to the future, the supporting infrastructure of the industrial chain will become crucial. It is estimated that by the end of 2025, the battery capacity in Türkiye will be about 5.7GW, while the module capacity will reach about 20GW. How to keep the manufacturing capacity synchronized with the market expansion will be the focus of its next stage of development. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
