With the increasing pressure on urban waste disposal, Indonesia is making every effort to promote the implementation of national waste to energy projects.

In June 2026, five key waste to energy projects in Indonesia will hold groundbreaking ceremonies, and the country's national level environmental protection and energy transformation plan will officially enter the construction phase.

Multiple parties work together to promote the project

The Office of the President of Indonesia and the Ministry of Food Coordination have announced that five projects scheduled to start construction in June 2026 will be located in Bugasi, Yogyakarta, Bogor, Denpasar, and Bandung. The first four projects will be promoted in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 109 of 2025, while the Bandung project will be constructed in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 35 of 2018, with the introduction of Japanese technical support. To address the funding and implementation challenges, Danantara, the Indonesian sovereign wealth fund, has taken on important coordination work.

Recently, Danan Tala has signed memorandums of cooperation with governments in West Java and other regions, prioritizing the layout of key areas with daily waste generation exceeding 1000 tons. This operation mode of central coordination, local cooperation, and fund support effectively reduces the approval time and ensures that projects start on time.

Outstanding strength of Chinese enterprises

The development prospects of Indonesia's waste to energy industry have attracted participants from all over the world. Official data shows that the total financing scale of this batch of projects is expected to reach 5 billion US dollars, equivalent to 87 trillion Indonesian rupiah. Danan Tara has launched the second round of cooperation enterprise screening, with the number of candidate enterprises increasing from 24 in the first round to 85, gathering industry leaders from China, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, France and other countries. In international competition, Chinese companies rely on excellent technology and rich operational experience to gain an advantage. Weiming Environmental Protection has successively won multiple key projects in places such as Denpasar, Wujiaxi, and Damaogor.

The project is equipped with a daily processing capacity of 1500 tons of grate furnace incineration power generation equipment, led by the Chinese side to form a cooperative team. A 30-year power purchase agreement has also been signed with PLN, with a price of 0.2 US dollars per kilowatt hour, laying a solid foundation for the long-term operation of the project.

Balancing scale and transformation

According to the national overall plan, Indonesia will integrate and build 30 centralized waste to energy areas in 61 counties and cities. In the second half of 2026, the local government will initiate the bidding process for the second batch of 12 locations. After the completion of all projects, the daily garbage processing capacity can reach 33000 tons, and the annual garbage processing capacity is about 14.4 million tons, which can digest 22.5% of the country's domestic waste. The first batch of projects are planned to be put into operation in 2027, and the remaining projects will be completed by May 2028. This series of projects can not only control pollution, ensure public health, but also help Indonesia reduce fossil energy consumption and accelerate the transition to green energy. Relying on advanced international technology, Indonesia is building a comprehensive urban waste resource utilization system.Editor/Gong Ziwei
