On the surging Yangtze River, another world-class bridge has reached a critical juncture. On the morning of June 9, 2026, at 9:28 am, the main bridge of Chongqi Yangtze River Bridge, the world's largest span railway and highway dual-use ballastless track cable-stayed bridge, was successfully closed. This super project located in the northern branch of the Yangtze River estuary has overcome multiple world-class technical difficulties during construction, demonstrating China's leading strength in intelligent bridge construction.

The Chongqi Gongtie Yangtze River Bridge is a key hub project of the national eight vertical and eight horizontal high-speed railway network along the Yangtze River, belonging to the Shanghai Chongqing Chengdu high-speed railway. The bridge connects Chongming in Shanghai and Qidong in Jiangsu, with a total length of 4.09 kilometers and a main span of 400 meters, spanning the northern branch channel of the Yangtze River estuary.
The bridge is designed as a double-layer structure. The upper layer is a two-way six lane first-class highway with a design speed of 100km/h; Two high-speed railway lines with a speed of 350 kilometers per hour and two intercity railways with a speed of 250 kilometers per hour are arranged on the lower level. It is not only the world's largest under construction ballastless track cable-stayed bridge for both public and railway use, but also China's first high-speed railway Yangtze River bridge with a speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

Yin Xueguo, the commander of Chongming Command Center of Shanghai State Railway Construction Management Company, stated that the closure of the main bridge means that the construction of the main structure of the bridge is basically completed. The follow-up project will comprehensively promote the construction of ancillary facilities on the bridge deck and the laying of ballastless tracks. The entire bridge is planned to reach the opening standard by 2027. Keywords: Chongqi Bridge, Super Engineering, Transportation

After the bridge is officially put into use, the railway travel time from Shanghai to Qidong will be reduced from the original two and a half hours to less than half an hour, which plays a very important role in improving the comprehensive transportation system of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and promoting the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Delta integration.Editor/Gong Ziwei
