On December 7, 2020, the joint start of the Sichuan Kaijiang-Chongqing Liangping Expressway was held in Renshi Township, Kaijiang County, at the junction of Sichuan and Chongqing. It is understood that this is the first inter-provincial expressway jointly started by Sichuan and Chongqing since Chongqing became a municipality directly under the Central Government.

The Kaijiang-Liangping Expressway route starts at Qiaoting Village, Kaijiang County, Dazhou City, Sichuan Province, connects to G5012 Enguang Expressway, ends at Yunlong Town, and connects to G42 Hurong Expressway. The total length of the project is about 75 kilometers, and the total investment is about 8.1 billion yuan. The entire line adopts two-way four-lane expressway standard construction, with a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour and a roadbed width of 26 meters. Among them, the Sichuan section is about 30 kilometers long and has a total investment of about 3.7 billion yuan. It is jointly invested and constructed by Sichuan Expressway Construction and Development Group Co., Ltd. and Sichuan Communications Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. The Chongqing section is about 45 kilometers long and has a total investment of about 4.4 billion yuan. It is jointly invested and constructed by 11 social investors including Chongqing Expressway Group Co., Ltd., China Railway Construction Chongqing Investment Group Co., Ltd. and the People's Government of Liangping District.

It is understood that 11 of the 25 expressways planned between Sichuan and Chongqing have been completed, and will be opened to traffic before the end of the year. Chengzi-Chongqing, Guang’an Ring and Yuguang Branch Line will be connected to the provincial boundary. The expressway between Sichuan and Chongqing will reach 13 articles. In 2020, the construction of 3 expressways from Luzhou to Yongchuan, Neijiang to Dazu, and Nanchong to Tongnan has been started. In addition to the newly started Kaijiang-Liangping expressway, there are 17 expressways between Sichuan and Chongqing that have been built and under construction. The level of interoperability will be greatly improved, and the ability to support the development of regional integration will be significantly enhanced.

The two provinces and cities of Sichuan and Chongqing plan to start the construction of Chengdu-Chongqing Expressway expansion, Sui-Chongqing Expressway expansion, Zizhong to Tongliang, and Dazhu to Dianjiang highway projects during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, striving to build a convenient and efficient multi-path channel between Sichuan and Chongqing Group, to contribute to the high-quality construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing Double-City Economic Circle.
