Recently, the National Energy Group conducted coal ammonia combustion tests under high load power generation conditions on a 600 MW coal-fired power generation unit at the Shenhua Guangdong Taishan Power Plant in China. This is currently the largest unit in the world that has completed ammonia combustion test verification. This innovative experiment aims to explore more efficient and environmentally friendly coal-fired power generation technologies, providing new possibilities for the sustainable development of the global energy industry.

The experiment mainly used ammonia coal premixed combustion technology, and according to the first stage test plan, successfully achieved stable operation of ammonia mixed combustion in coal-fired boilers under multiple load conditions such as 500 MW and 300 MW. The operating parameters of the boiler are normal, with an ammonia burnout rate of 99.99%. The nitrogen oxide concentration before the denitrification device is equivalent to that of coal combustion, with an increase controlled within 20 milligrams per standard cubic meter. The emission concentration of flue gas pollutants has not changed. The experiment verified the progressiveness of many innovative technologies such as ammonia gas solid two-phase combustion intensification, plasma pyrolysis, etc., and reflected the excellent effect of gas-solid two-phase ammonia coal mixed combustion burner in inhibiting the generation of nitrogen oxides. Meanwhile, significant effects of different combustion blending methods on the generation of nitrogen oxides were also discovered, forming a new understanding of ammonia blending combustion technology.

The use of new zero carbon fuels such as ammonia to replace fossil fuels is an important technological means to achieve the "dual carbon" goal. At present, units with a capacity of 600 MW and above account for a relatively high proportion of thermal power installations in China and are the main models. Therefore, exploring the ammonia blending combustion technology of 600 MW coal-fired power generation units is of great significance for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. By incorporating zero carbon fuels such as ammonia into coal-fired power generation units, the consumption of fossil fuels can be significantly reduced, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide. Meanwhile, the exploration and application of this technology can also provide support and reference for the optimization of China's energy structure and the development of clean energy. The National Energy Group is actively seeking new paths and technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power generation, and has locked in the still in its early stages of coal ammonia combustion power generation technology. In order to comprehensively promote the full chain development of this technology from basic research to industrial application, the group has integrated internal scientific and technological innovation resources, partnered with units such as China Shenhua, Yantai Longyuan, and Taishan Power Generation Company, and also cooperated with top discipline research universities in China. At the beginning of 2022, the group successfully completed the world's first 40 MW coal-fired industrial boiler's ammonia blending combustion pilot study. On this basis, in order to solve the key technical problems of combustion stability, heat distribution, operation control, and flue gas nitrogen oxide generation faced by coal ammonia blending combustion in larger capacity boilers, the group has continued to conduct in-depth research in theoretical mechanisms, key equipment, compatibility with boilers, and operation control. At present, the ammonia blending combustion project of a 600 MW coal-fired unit has been included in the list of the first major technical equipment projects in the energy field of the third batch of the National Energy Administration. This marks that the National Energy Group has initially established a stable, clean, and efficient ammonia blending combustion technology system, providing strong technical support for the low-carbon transformation of the coal-fired power generation industry.
