The starting point of the project is located at the Mertiyari converter station in Sindh Province, and the endpoint is at the Lahore converter station in Punjab Province. This DC transmission line has a total length of approximately 886 kilometers, crossing the southern and northern regions of Pakistan. It is currently the highest voltage level and longest transmission line project in Pakistan. This project is not only an important milestone in Pakistan's electricity industry, but also a model for deepening cooperation between China and Pakistan in the energy field. Not only does it represent an important breakthrough in Pakistan's power transmission technology, but it also marks a further deepening of cooperation between China and Pakistan in the energy field.

This project adopts high-voltage direct current transmission technology, which has advantages such as long transmission distance, large transmission capacity, and low losses. For a country like Pakistan, where electricity demand continues to grow, it is undoubtedly a crucial energy infrastructure. Through the implementation of this project, Pakistan will be able to effectively solve the bottleneck problem of energy transmission, improve the efficiency and stability of electricity supply, and provide strong electricity security for the country's economic and social development.

During the project initiation phase, as an important investment project of State Grid China Electric Power Technology Equipment Co., Ltd., the project officially started construction in December 2018. This decision marks a solid step in energy cooperation between China and Pakistan, injecting new impetus into the development of Pakistan's electricity industry. With the advancement of engineering construction, the Merla DC transmission project successfully completed all 181 testing projects on June 5, 2021, which is a key milestone in the project construction process. The successful completion of these testing projects has ensured the safety and reliability of transmission equipment, laying a solid foundation for subsequent commercial operations.

During the project operation phase, the Merla DC transmission project overcame the adverse effects of local pollution, strong winds, and abnormally high environmental temperatures, and maintained the international advanced level in terms of equipment availability and various performance indicators of the converter station. This fully proves the technical progressiveness and adaptability of the project and provides strong technical support for the development of Pakistan's power industry. The Merra DC transmission project also helps Pakistan to achieve smooth operation of the north-south power artery, effectively reducing the risk of power transmission losses, power grid accidents, and power outages. Since its commissioning, the project has been operating smoothly with electricity for over 1000 days, with a cumulative transmission capacity of billions of kilowatt hours, effectively meeting the electricity needs of local households.

Meanwhile, this project is also an important component of the construction of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor, as an important economic corridor connecting China and Pakistan, aims to promote trade and economic development between the two countries. The construction of high-voltage direct current transmission projects not only helps to improve Pakistan's power infrastructure level, but also further promotes cooperation between China and Pakistan in energy, transportation, communication and other fields.

The implementation of this project will also create a large number of employment opportunities for Pakistan and promote local economic prosperity. Meanwhile, by introducing advanced power technology and equipment, Pakistan will also be able to enhance its local power industry level and promote sustainable development of the energy industry.
