Recently, the 5-month-long igus Asian environmental protection cycling journey concluded in China. In Asia, the plastic bicycle igus:bike completed 74 journeys in relays, covering a cumulative distance of 1,355.7 kilometers. During the journey, igus demonstrated through practical actions to industrial customers, partners, and consumers that the ultimate fate of plastic is not just to be incinerated or landfilled, but it can be used as a raw material to manufacture environmentally friendly products.
Plastic Circular Economy: Turning Waste into Treasure
The igus:bike is a corrosion-resistant and lubrication-free urban bicycle. 90% of it is made of plastic, and 50% of the plastic is made from recycled plastics such as discarded fishing nets. There is no doubt that this is a milestone product for igus in practicing the "plastic circular economy". The igus:bike was officially launched in 2024 and renamed as RCYL.
In recent years, igus has not only launched its own chainge waste drag chain recycling program and an online recycling platform, invested in a series of environmental protection and plastic recycling projects, but also introduced environmentally friendly products made from recycled pellets, steadily promoting the development of the plastic circular economy.
From Cost Reduction and Efficiency Improvement to Sustainable Development
During the journey, the igus:bike visited many long-term customers who share the same philosophy and have cooperated with igus for decades. From acquaintance to trust, from prototype to mass production, from solving problems to leading the industry, igus and its customers have always walked hand in hand and grown together. Thanks to the trust of its customers, igus' engineering plastic products have expanded from single components to automation solutions such as the iggy rob humanoid robot and digital services like the iguverse metaverse. Over the past 60 years, igus has continuously provided high-quality products and services to 188,000 active customers around the world.
Facing the increasingly scarce resources and the urgent need for environmental protection, igus has forward-lookingly introduced a series of new plastic materials that do not contain PTFE and have passed the toxic PFAS detection, pushing the environmental protection standards of engineering plastics to a new height. Through the igus:bike global journey, igus believes that engineering plastics can not only help enterprises reduce energy consumption and emissions, but also break boundaries and harvest unlimited possibilities.
Next, the igus:bike will continue to carry forward the spirit of "carbon" exploration to verify the sustainability of plastics.
