The first 5,000-ton demonstration ship of Pinglu Canal has started construction in Guigang, Guangxi. The ship innovatively adopts the five design concepts of “safety, energy saving, green, intelligent and home-like”, and is scheduled to be put into trial operation in April 2026.
In terms of safety performance, the ship significantly improves anti-submergence through the addition of anti-collision gangways; in terms of green technology, the ship adopts Yuchai LNG single-fuel main engine with ultra-vacuum insulated tank design, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 23% and sulfide emissions by 99% per annum compared with traditional diesel power; and in terms of intelligence, the ship is equipped with video monitoring and ship-to-shore cooperative scheduling system.
As the first batch of customized ships in Pinglu Canal, its construction will promote the innovation and upgrading of the whole industrial chain of the ship industry. Experts said that the commissioning of this ship type will effectively reduce the logistics cost in southwest China by about 15%, enhance the cargo throughput efficiency of Beibuwan Port by more than 20%, and is of strategic significance to improve the new land and sea corridor in the west.
Overview of Pinglu Canal
Geographic location: The starting point is located at the mouth of Pingtang River in Xijin Reservoir, Hengzhou City, Nanning; it passes through Linyuan Town, Lingshan County, Qinzhou, and finally connects to Qinzhou Port of Beibu Gulf, with a total length of about 134.2 kilometers.
Grade of waterway: constructed according to the standard of inland waterway grade I, it can navigate 5,000-ton ships, and will take into account the demand of 10,000-ton cargo ships in the future.
Investment scale: total investment of about 72.7 billion yuan, is the largest single investment in Guangxi water transportation projects.
Project Progress
At present, Pinglu Canal has entered a comprehensive construction stage:
Channel excavation: the main project of the three hubs of Madao, Youth and Qishi is steadily advancing, with a cumulative investment of more than 30 billion yuan.
Lock construction: the world's advanced water-saving lock technology is adopted, which can significantly reduce operational water consumption.
Demonstration Ship: 5,000-ton LNG-powered demonstration ship has started construction and will be commissioned in 2026, leading the development of green and intelligent shipping.
Strategic significance
Optimize logistics pattern: Cargoes from Southwest China go to the sea via Pinglu Canal, shortening the voyage by about 560 kilometers compared with the original Pearl River Estuary route, and reducing the logistics cost by more than 20%.
Promote regional economy: drive industrial upgrading in Nanning and Qinzhou along the route, and expect to create more than 100,000 new jobs.
Enhance the competitiveness of Beibu Gulf Port: help build an international gateway port, and the long-term annual cargo volume is expected to reach more than 100 million tons.
After the completion of the Pinglu Canal, it will become the most convenient sea access in the southwest of China, which will have a far-reaching impact on the promotion of western development and the construction of the “One Belt, One Road”.(This article is from the official website of Jian Dao www.seetao.com.
