[Pre feasibility study on the launch of the Algerian to European Hydrogen Alliance project] The Algerian European Hydrogen Alliance (ALTEH2A) and the participants of the SoutH2 Corridor project held a special meeting in Berlin to conduct in-depth discussions on the factors that affect the successful import of hydrogen energy from Algeria. This meeting marks the official launch of the pre feasibility study for the ALTEH2A project, which will systematically analyze the layout of Algeria's green hydrogen production base, potential transportation routes, and European market acceptance capacity. It is expected to form a preliminary strategic plan for the construction of hydrogen energy infrastructure from Algeria to Europe in the second half of 2026. Multi party construction of green hydrogen corridor to promote the transformation of European energy structure The ALTEH2A project was launched in October 2024 through a memorandum of understanding signed by VNG AG from Germany, SONATRACH and Sonelgaz from Algeria, Snam and SeaCorridor from Italy, and VERBUND from Austria. The cooperating parties will jointly evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of large-scale green hydrogen production in Algeria, and study the implementation plan of transporting it to Europe through the SoutH2 corridor. The corridor is over 3000 kilometers long, connecting North Africa, Italy, Austria, and Germany, and has been listed as a project of common interest by the European Union. In January 2025, the five relevant countries signed the Joint Statement on Political Support for the Southern Hydrogen Corridor, providing policy support for its strategic advancement. VNG CEO Ulf Heimler pointed out that the construction of SoutH2 hydrogen energy infrastructure will create an important opportunity for Europe to introduce low-cost green hydrogen on a large scale, which has strategic significance for ensuring regional energy security and promoting decarbonization in the industrial sector. Nour Eddine DAOUDI, CEO of SONATRACH, emphasized that Algeria is actively building a green hydrogen production and export center with abundant renewable energy, improved energy infrastructure, and superior geographical location. The ALTEH2A project will become an important practice for Algeria to build an energy partnership with EU countries, opening up new paths for sustainable development and international cooperation.
