On February 5, 2026, the China Laos 500 kV interconnection project made significant progress, and the transmission line crossing the border between China and Laos was officially connected, marking the completion of the entire project line.
The China Laos 500 kV interconnection project is a major engineering project included in the China Laos community of shared future action plan. The starting point of the project is located in Oudomxay Province, Laos, and the landing point is in Yunnan Province, China. The total length of the transmission line is 177.5 kilometers, which was invested and constructed by EDL-T and China Southern Power Grid Corporation respectively. The construction started on February 26, 2025 and will be officially put into operation in April 2026.

After the project is put into operation, the two-way power mutual assistance capacity between China and Laos is expected to reach 1.5 million kilowatts, and it can deliver 3 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually. When Laos has surplus electricity, it can send clean energy to China; During peak electricity consumption in Laos, clean electricity from China can also be replenished in a timely manner, achieving cross regional and large-scale optimization of clean energy allocation.
This project will effectively enhance the power mutual assistance capacity between China and Laos, as well as the power supply capacity in northern Laos, becoming a green channel for power interconnection and clean energy mutual assistance in the Lancang Mekong region.Editor/Yang Meiling
