Ørsted signs PPA with Johnson & Johnson and Google

The Danish energy company Ørsted has signed two power purchase agreements (PPA) with Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and Google. According to one of its two PPAs, Johnson & Johnson will receive electricity from Ørsted's 250MW Sparta Solar plant in Texas. Another agreement authorizes pharmaceutical companies to use the Kilgarvan Wind Farm in County Kerry, Ireland and the Booltiagh Wind Farm I in County Clare, Ireland. The PPA for the Sparta Solar project includes a contract capacity of 55MW.

The solar project is part of the Helena Energy Center, which is a 518 MW wind and solar project. Ørsted made a final investment decision earlier in 2021. The PPA for the two Irish wind farms is an eight-year commercial agreement designed to meet the power needs of Johnson & Johnson's four manufacturing plants in Ireland.

Ørsted Onshore Vice President Melissa Peterson said: "I am very pleased that we have partnered with Johnson & Johnson to help them achieve their ambitious goals for their global business, which includes purchasing 100% of electricity from renewable energy by 2025. We are able to use flexible Customized solutions to meet their power needs in the US and Irish markets are really great.” According to the agreement, Google will purchase 50MW of the 900MW Borkum RiffgrundIII offshore wind farm planned by Ørsted in the North Sea, Germany. CPPA aims to help Google fulfill its commitment to provide carbon-free energy to all of its data centers, campuses and cloud areas by 2030. Amanda Peterson Corio, head of Google’s Energy Development Data Center, said: “We are very happy to collaborate with Ørsted on this project, which will help Google achieve its 24/7 carbon-free goal in Germany. We agree with Ørsted’s commitment to carbon-free Future commitments and optimism about the important role that offshore wind power can play in enabling other entities to join the 24/7 carbon-free movement.
