Attiko Metro and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have agreed on a €580 million funding for the construction of the first Alsosvikou-Gudi line of the future Athens Metro Line 4. The agreement is the EIB's largest support for a new transport project in the country and a single project in Greece. This is the second tranche of the total EUR 730 million financing provided by the European Investment Bank for the project.

"The Attiko Metro project would not have been possible if the Attiko Metro Project had not been included in the EU's financing scheme, if the European Investment Bank had not provided support and a decisive contribution from the start of the construction of the Athens Metro Project. And Thessaloniki until now," Attiko Metro CEO Nikos Kouretas said.

The 30-year loan will be used for the construction of the AlsosVeikou-Goudi line (section A), which is 12.8 kilometers long and has 15 stations, 9 of which are interchange stations. The project includes a tunnel connecting Line 4 with Lines 2 and 3, and an access tunnel to Kaehaki's train stop and maintenance yard. In June 2021, a contract of EUR 1.2 billion was signed for the construction of the first segment, which will serve the densely populated areas of the city, as well as some important buildings and facilities such as hospitals, educational institutions, courts and public organizations or ministries . The project is valued at 1.5 billion euros and is expected to be completed in about eight years.

The Alsos Veikou–Goudi metro section is one of five sections of the Athens Metro Line 4, a 38.2-kilometer U-shaped line with 35 stations. The future line will provide metro transport services from AlsosVeikou and Evange lismos to Faros and Maroussi, and together with its extension, it will further connect to Vyronas/Ano Ilioupoli and Petroupoli and the national road. This follows the first loan agreement in 2019, when Attiko Metro agreed to the European Investment Bank to provide 150 million euros of support from the total approved credit to be disbursed in November 2021. At present, the two metro lines in Athens are 43 kilometers long and can accommodate 40 modern stations. Among them, Line 3 connects the port of Piraeus and the Athens International Airport. The three new stations are expected to open in the summer of 2022.Editor/XingWentao
