Corio Generation, a portfolio company of Macquarie Green Investment Group, plans to develop five offshore wind projects in Brazil with a combined capacity of more than 5 gigawatts. Corio intends to develop the five projects with Brazilian power generation company Servtec, subject to completion of documentation and regulatory approvals.
Five offshore wind projects in Brazil
Corio and Servtec are aiming to apply for leases for five fixed bottom projects in the country's northeastern, southeastern and southern seas, with installed capacity ranging from about 500 MW to over 1.2 GW. These projects include the 1.2GW Costa Nordeste wind farm on Brazil's northeast coast, the 495MW Vitoria wind farm on Brazil's southeast coast, and the 1.2GW Guarita, 1.2GW Cassino and 1,170MW Rio large-scale projects on Brazil's south coast.
The two companies have been working together for over 18 months to analyze opportunities in the Brazilian market. Their joint analysis of the country's marine area and environmental and technological considerations led them to select these five sites for development.
Jonathan Cole, CEO of Corio Generation, said, “Brazil is rich in wind resources along its coastline, providing an important new source of clean, affordable and reliable energy. Great opportunity to bring economic investment and green jobs. This is a historic day for Corio, marking our company's entry into the Americas market. As a professional developer of offshore wind energy, with strong industry expertise and deep long-term Capital, Corio is delighted to partner with Servtec, one of Brazil’s most respected renewable energy developers.”
Brazil's vast coastline with good wind speeds is seen as a major new growth market for offshore wind. Factors driving demand include the need to identify new low-cost renewable energy sources, and the growing demand for electricity in densely populated coastal areas.
Lauro Fuiza Neto, Managing Partner of Servtec Energia, said: “Servtec is proud to join forces with Corio to support offshore wind in Brazil. As a long-term player in the renewable energy industry, we have been working hard to build the now 22 GW onshore wind market. We are very happy Delighted to embark on the journey again to create a complementary clean energy source for Brazil towards a low carbon economy of the future."
