The latest report released by the International Energy Agency on the 24th predicts that global nuclear power generation will hit a record high in 2025. As the global transition to clean energy accelerates, low-emission energy sources will meet new global electricity demand over the next three years.

The annual analysis of global electricity market developments and policies, called Power 2024, predicts that by 2025, global nuclear power generation is expected to reach an all-time high as nuclear power generation climbs in France, several nuclear power plants come back online in Japan, and new reactors enter commercial operation in several countries.

By early 2025, renewables will overtake coal and account for more than a third of the world's total electricity generation, the report said. Low-emission energy sources, including renewables such as solar and wind, as well as nuclear, are expected to account for nearly half of global electricity generation by 2026.

Global electricity demand growth moderates slightly to 2.2% in 2023 due to declining consumption in developed economies, but is expected to increase at an average annual rate of 3.4% from 2024 to 2026, the report said. By 2026, about 85% of global electricity demand growth is expected to come from outside advanced economies.

Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency, noted that the power sector currently emits more carbon dioxide than any other sector. However, it is encouraging that the rapid growth of renewables and the steady expansion of nuclear power will meet the new global electricity demand over the next three years. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
