On April 12, 2024, the groundbreaking ceremony of the new energy special polyolefin special materials project of Pourene Crystal New Materials Shanghai Co., Ltd. was held in Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone.

The project investment of 2.25 billion yuan, plans to be divided into two phases of construction, of which the first phase of planning to build 140,000 tons of capacity, is expected to put into operation in the third quarter of 2025, the same period to start the construction of the second phase of the project, is expected to put into operation in the third quarter of 2026. After the full production will reach 280,000 tons/year of ultra-net high purity high molecular weight polyethylene production scale.

High-end polyolefin, as a new material category supported by the state, has far-reaching strategic significance and huge market demand. In the fields of ultra-net high-purity ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, the domestic self-sufficiency rate is still at a low level. Especially in key application areas such as lithium diaphragm, filter materials, and medical polymer raw materials, they are still mainly dependent on foreign imports. This highlights the lack of domestic independent production capacity in these high-end polyolefin fields, and the need to increase research and development efforts to improve the domestic self-sufficiency rate to meet the growing market demand.

Pourene Crystal has broken through key technical barriers such as catalyst, polymerization process and application scenario development, and successfully developed high molecular weight polyethylene series products, mainly used in lithium battery separator, melt spinning medium strength fiber, wet high strength fiber, medical polymer, semiconductor special filter materials and other future material fields supported by Shanghai.
