Sweden-based construction and development company Skanska has won an $861 million contract to transform the 73-acre South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) into one of the largest purpose-built offshore wind farms in the United States.
The infrastructure project will support the Imperial Wind Farm Offshore Wind Farm project, which is currently being developed by Equinor 15 to 30 miles from New York City.
"We are proud to play a role in the transformation of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, which will transform a historic feature of the Brooklyn waterfront into an industry-leading offshore wind farm," said Richard Kennedy, president and CEO of Skanska. .
"This project underscores Skanska's commitment to building sustainable infrastructure, a state-of-the-art facility that will provide clean and alternative energy to New York City and serve as a national model for a renewable energy hub."
The scope of the project includes demolition of the existing building, above-ground modifications to support installation of wind turbine components, installation of underground utilities, upgrades to site lighting, security and safety systems, and installation of two new heavy-duty crane platforms.
Work will also include major waterfront and Marine upgrades, including dredging new and existing berths, bulkhead upgrades, and installation of new jetty and marina facilities.
A new 85,000-square-foot operations and maintenance building, including warehouses, offices and parking facilities, will also be constructed to support the construction and ongoing operations and maintenance of the Imperial Wind 1 project.
Upon completion, the SBMT will serve as the key infrastructure for Imperial Wind 1, facilitating the reception, storage and pre-assembly of critical offshore wind turbine components. The port will serve as an operations and maintenance center for the wind farm and as an interconnect point to integrate power from Imperial Wind 1 into the New York grid at the Gowanus Substation in Brooklyn.
SBMT is intended to be a central, scalable hub for the expanding U.S. East Coast offshore wind market, including a port for future offshore wind development. Editor/Wang Tian
