The Minister of Public Enterprises of Egypt, Mohamed Shimi, met with the Norwegian Ambassador to Egypt and Libya, Hilde Kremetsdal, at the administrative capital headquarters in Cairo. Both sides witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between Egyptalum, an Egyptian aluminum company, and Scatec Renewable Energy, a Norwegian company. According to the agreement, a solar power project with a total installed capacity of 1000 megawatt hours will be constructed at the Nagahamadi Aluminum Plant in the province of Qena, Egypt, with a total investment of 650 million US dollars. The project will be implemented in two phases, with each phase constructing 500 megawatt hours for a total duration of 24 months, and supporting the installation of a battery energy storage system with a maximum capacity of 200 megawatts.
Norwegian Scatec Renewable Energy Company will be responsible for the full financing, construction, and operation of the project through a power purchase agreement model. After the project is put into operation, clean electricity will meet a considerable proportion of the energy demand of Egypt Aluminum Company, significantly reducing the company's carbon emissions. The Minister of Public Enterprises of Egypt stated that this project is an important milestone in Egypt's promotion of industrial green transformation and will significantly enhance the competitiveness of the Egyptian aluminum company in the EU market. The Norwegian ambassador emphasized that this reflects the continuous investment of Norwegian companies in the renewable energy market in Egypt, and both sides will continue to deepen their strategic cooperation in the field of clean energy.
