On July 13, 2025, Egyptian Minister of Public Enterprises, Mohamed Shimi, met with the Norwegian Ambassador to Egypt and Libya, Hilde Kremetsdal, and his delegation at the headquarters of the Egyptian administrative capital. Together, they witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between Egyptalum, a subsidiary of the Egyptian Metallurgical Industry Holding Company, and a project company under the Norwegian renewable energy company Scatec.

According to the agreement, Egypt's aluminum plant located in Nagahamadi Province will construct a solar power project with a total installed capacity of 1000 megawatt hours, to be implemented in two phases of 500 megawatt hours each, with a construction period of 24 months, and equipped with a battery energy storage system of up to 200 megawatts. The total investment of the project is approximately 650 million US dollars, fully financed, constructed, and operated by Scatec of Norway through a power purchase agreement model. After the completion of the project, clean electricity will significantly enhance the energy supply stability of the Egyptian aluminum plant and significantly reduce its dependence on traditional energy sources.

This project is an important achievement of Egypt Norway strategic cooperation in the field of green energy, which not only conforms to Egypt's national renewable energy development strategy, but also reflects the policy direction of improving industrial energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Through the collaborative cooperation between the government, enterprises, and international capital, the project will achieve comprehensive benefits such as cost reduction and efficiency improvement, enhanced export competitiveness, and reduced carbon emissions, helping Egyptaluminum consolidate its position in the global aluminum market. Currently, over 50% of the company's products are exported to the European Union market.

Norwegian Ambassador to Egypt and Libya Hilde Kremetsdal highly praised the progress of bilateral cooperation, pointing out that Norwegian companies are continuously deepening their investments in key areas such as renewable energy in Egypt, providing support for Egypt's energy transition. The Egyptian Ministry of Public Enterprises reiterated that it will provide policy support for domestic and foreign private enterprises to participate in national key projects and promote more cooperation in green energy. The implementation of the project will provide a demonstration case for the coordinated development of clean energy and industry in countries along the the Belt and Road.
