  • China Huadian Grid Energy Storage Power Station Pioneers a New Era of Conventional+Grid Dual Mode Energy Storage

On July 22, 2025, China Huadian Corporation successfully connected the first batch of 250MW/1GWh energy storage units of a 500MW/2GWh electrochemical independent energy storage power station invested and constructed in Kashgar, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The total investment of this project is about 3.2 billion yuan, which is currently the largest grid type energy storage demonstration project in China in terms of individual capacity.

The project adopts an innovative dual-mode configuration of "grid type energy storage+conventional energy storage", with each building a capacity of 250MW/1GWh. The overall project consists of 100 sets of lithium iron phosphate energy storage units and 1 220kV collection station. After completion, it can store an average of 1.14 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually, release 1.04 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, and is expected to reduce the photovoltaic waste rate in Kashgar by 10%.

The grid based energy storage technology breaks through the limitations of traditional grid based energy storage and has the following core advantages:

1. Proactively support grid frequency and voltage regulation

2. Can provide independent power supply in island mode

3. Significantly enhance the capacity of new energy consumption

4. Enhance the anti-interference capability of the power grid

China Huadian Corporation stated that the successful implementation of this project will provide an important demonstration for the construction of China's new power system, and promote the transformation and upgrading of energy storage technology from "passive response" to "active support". The grid type energy storage technology adopted in the project can effectively solve the stability challenges brought by the high proportion of renewable energy grid connection, providing strong support for the high-quality development of new energy in Xinjiang region.

Industry insiders point out that although the current cost of grid based energy storage is about 15% higher than traditional energy storage, with technological progress and economies of scale, it is expected to achieve rapid cost reduction in the next 3-5 years. The construction experience of this project will provide important reference for the development of large-scale grid type energy storage power stations in the future, accelerating the development of China's energy storage industry towards high-quality direction.
