On August 1, 2025, the project of diverting water from the Yangtze River to fill the Han River ushered in important progress: the two hard rock roadheader "Jianghan Ping 'an" and "Jianghan Kaituo" developed by China Railway Equipment both broke through the "Thousand Rings" mark in segment assembly. This achievement marks that the construction of diversion tunnel has entered a new stage of speeding up and tackling key problems.
Among them, "Jianghan Ping 'an", as the largest diameter and the most complete function double shield hard rock roadheader in the current domestic diversion tunnel project, has an excavation diameter of 11.93 meters, and shoulders the 16.6-kilometer-long water conveyance tunnel excavation task of the second bid section of the Hanjiang River Diversion Project and Jinjie Electromechanical Installation. The equipment is equipped with a series of advanced intelligent systems, which can ensure the construction goal of "safety, high efficiency and reliability" in the excavation of super-large section of tunnel. In July, its segment assembly volume exceeded 243 rings, with a penetration rate of 439 meters per month, setting a new record for the monthly excavation speed of similar projects in China. Up to now, the total excavation mileage has reached 1887 meters.

Another "Jianghan Kaituo" hard rock roadheader is designed with a single shield, and the excavation diameter is 12.23 meters. It is the largest diameter equipment of its kind used in domestic water conservancy projects at present, and it is mainly responsible for crossing the longest soft rock deformation section in the Hanjiang River Diversion Project. The equipment integrates a full set of operation functions such as tunnel excavation, slag discharge, guiding and material transportation, and undertakes the task of excavating the 12.15-kilometer water conveyance tunnel in the 6th bid section of civil engineering construction and Jinjie electromechanical installation. In July, its segment assembly volume exceeded 190 rings, with a penetration of 343 meters in a single month, showing strong construction efficiency, with a total mileage of 1803 meters.

The Han River Diversion Project is the first major project in the follow-up project of South-to-North Water Transfer Project. After the completion of the project, it will further open the water conveyance channel from the Yangtze River to the north, improve the water supply guarantee rate of the mid-line project, alleviate the contradiction between supply and demand of water resources in the Han River basin, and improve the weakening of water resources allocation capacity and the water ecological environment problems in the middle and lower reaches of the Han River basin. At the same time, the project will connect the Yangtze River and Hanjiang River basins with North China and improve the national water network pattern, which is of great significance for ensuring national water security, promoting economic and social development and serving to build a new development pattern.
