Recently, there has been a new wave of development in the field of perovskite batteries. According to data from Oriental Fortune, on August 1st, the perovskite battery sector index reported 822.983 points, an increase of 2%, with a transaction volume of 6.723 billion yuan. Compared to 567.513 points on September 26 last year, the sector index has nearly doubled, reflecting the strong attention of the capital market to this emerging technology.

In terms of industry trends, multiple companies are accelerating their layout in the field of perovskite batteries. Kunshan Xiexin Optoelectronic Materials Co., Ltd. recently completed a C2 round of nearly 200 million yuan financing, and with the C1 round of 500 million yuan financing completed by the end of 2023, the total amount of C round financing is nearly 700 million yuan. At the same time, the environmental impact assessment of the 200 MW perovskite solar cell production project of Guangyin (Jiangsu) New Energy Co., Ltd. has been approved. The project plans to invest 300 million yuan to build one perovskite photovoltaic solar cell production line, which will achieve an annual production capacity of 200 MW perovskite photovoltaic solar cells after completion.

Jiang Weilong, Vice President of Jidian Solar Energy, said in an interview, "The photovoltaic industry is currently in a critical period of technological transformation, and perovskite technology is becoming the focus of capital attention due to its higher theoretical efficiency limit and greater cost reduction space. Currently, the industrialization of perovskite minerals has reached a critical point of transition from pilot scale to mass production

From the perspective of technological development, the photoelectric conversion efficiency of perovskite cells has been significantly improved. Liu Chang, a specially appointed professor at the School of Electrical Engineering, Nanhua University, pointed out that "the efficiency of perovskite cells has jumped from 3.8% in 2009 to 27% today (for single junction cells), and stacked technology is more likely to break through the efficiency ceiling of crystalline silicon cells. In terms of cost, its raw material cost is only 1/5 of crystalline silicon, and after scaling up, the cost per kilowatt hour is expected to drop to below 0.5 yuan

The industrialization process is accelerating. In February 2024, Jidian Solar's first gigawatt level perovskite module production line was put into operation in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province; In June, the GCL Optoelectronics gigawatt perovskite industrial base was put into operation in Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, with a total investment of 5 billion yuan; In July, the first phase of the perovskite optoelectronic semiconductor production base project of Hangzhou Zhongneng Optoelectronic Technology Co., Ltd. started, with a total investment of about 500 million yuan.

It is worth noting that perovskite technology has shown great potential in niche markets such as Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) and automotive photovoltaics. Jiang Weilong said, "These application scenarios have more diverse requirements for products, requiring the implementation of power generation functions on the basis of meeting the standards of the building materials or automotive industries, which puts higher demands on enterprises

According to a research report by Dongwu Securities, the production capacity of perovskite is expected to reach 100 gigawatts by 2030, and the module market size is expected to approach 40 billion yuan. In distributed scenarios, the penetration rate of perovskite technology is expected to reach 5.6%. With the expansion of industrial scale, the market for related supporting materials will also experience rapid development.

In terms of industry competition, cross-border enterprises such as CATL New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., BYD Co., Ltd., and BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. have entered the market one after another. Professor Liu Chang pointed out, "In the future, industries will experience an accelerated reshuffle process, with short-term competition focusing on technology route selection and mid-term shifting towards cost control

To promote the healthy development of the industry, industry insiders suggest that: firstly, enterprises should focus on industrial technology research and development to avoid vicious competition at low prices; Secondly, accelerate the establishment of an industry standard system, especially stability verification standards; Thirdly, we hope that government departments can provide more support in the early stages of commercialization, such as establishing dedicated perovskite sections in large-scale projects.

It is widely expected in the industry that by 2027-2028, the perovskite battery industry will officially enter the gigawatt level mass production stage, and the technical roadmap and market pattern will gradually become clear. This emerging technology is expected to bring new development opportunities to the photovoltaic industry and promote the process of clean energy transformation.
