Recently, Saudi International Electricity and Water Company (ACWA Power) successfully won the bid for the NOOR Midelt 2 and NOOR Midelt 3 integrated solar and energy storage projects in an international tender organized by the Moroccan Sustainable Energy Agency. The total capacity of this project is 800MW photovoltaic and 1.2GWh energy storage, making it an important renewable energy project in North Africa.

As a well-known energy developer in Saudi Arabia, ACWA Power currently operates 109 projects in 15 countries with a total investment of $117 billion. The winning project is located in the Mederet region of Morocco, adopting the BOO model and signing a 30-year power purchase agreement.

It is worth noting that the energy storage system of this project adopts the solution of China Guoxuan High tech, including 314Ah energy storage cells, 5MWh liquid cooled energy storage system, and 5.5MW PCS medium voltage integrated unit. The German factory of Guoxuan High Tech will be responsible for equipment supply, and its Moroccan factory is also under construction, which will achieve localized production in the future.

Morocco has launched the NOOR National Solar Energy Plan since 2010, aiming to increase the proportion of renewable energy generation to 52% by 2030. After the project is put into operation, it can provide an average of 2.4 TWh of green electricity per year, and the expected emission reduction throughout its lifecycle is 24 million tons.

This cooperation is an important achievement of the deepening strategic cooperation between ACWA Power and Guoxuan High Tech. In October 2024, the two parties also signed a joint development agreement to jointly build a 500MW wind farm with a 2000MWh energy storage system. ACWA Power plans to invest an additional $5 billion in Morocco over the next five years, with a focus on green hydrogen, seawater desalination, and energy storage.
