Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) recently signed an agreement with HiTHIUM Energy Storage in Xiamen, China to construct a 4GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in the provinces of Shattabuk and Ha'il. The project is jointly constructed by Saudi engineering company Alfanar Projects and is expected to be put into operation in 2026.
The total contract amount is nearly 1.4 billion riyals. Among them, Haichen Energy Storage obtained two supply contracts with amounts of 686.4 million riyals (approximately 1.32 billion yuan) and 671 million riyals (approximately 1.29 billion yuan), respectively, and another operation and maintenance contract of 6.1 million riyals. Alfanar is responsible for construction contracts with amounts of 441 million riyals and 436 million riyals, respectively.
Haichen Energy Storage will be responsible for system design, equipment supply, installation supervision, and post maintenance, using its 6.25MWh long-term battery unit and container modular solution to adapt to the high temperature and harsh environment in Saudi Arabia. Alfanar is mainly responsible for engineering construction.

This project is an important component of Saudi Arabia's second phase energy storage plan. The SEC will launch the program in April 2023, with a total scale of 2.5GW and coverage in multiple regions. Saudi Arabia plans to expand its energy storage capacity to 8GWh by the end of 2025 and achieve an installed capacity of 48GWh by 2030.
As Saudi Arabia's renewable energy grid continues to expand, energy storage plays a crucial role in maintaining grid stability. Chinese energy storage companies, relying on their technological strength and production capacity advantages, are continuously deepening their participation in the energy transformation process in Saudi Arabia and even the Middle East.
