Recently, Italy's large power producer IPP EP Produzione has announced that it will collaborate with China's Sunac Power to deploy a 100MW/220MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Trapani region of Sicily, injecting new energy into Italy's energy storage development.

This project uses the PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage product from Sunac Power, with a total capacity of approximately 2 hours of energy storage time. Its configuration is very sophisticated, consisting of 44 AC Block modules, each module integrating batteries and PCS, with a compact and reasonable design. This not only greatly accelerates the installation speed, but also significantly improves the efficiency of operation and maintenance control. The proportion of photovoltaics in Sicily is extremely high, and this energy storage system is like a "stabilizer" that can effectively help the local power grid maintain stable operation.

It is worth mentioning that Italy will hold its first MACSE energy storage capacity procurement auction on September 30th. MACSE stands for Electricity Storage Capacity Procurement Mechanism, led by Terna, the transmission system operator. Through this mechanism, energy storage capacity will be centrally pushed to the market for renewable energy operators to purchase load transfer services. The initial auction target is set at 10 GWh of energy storage capacity, mainly concentrated in the core areas of photovoltaic installations in southern Italy, Sardinia, and Sicily.

From a long-term perspective, Italy is ambitious and plans to achieve a 50GWh energy storage target by 2030. Although some industry insiders feel that this goal is somewhat aggressive, the development trend of the market is very positive. Under the active promotion of developers such as Zelestra, Neoen, Engie, ContourGlobal, large-scale energy storage projects are continuously advancing. Moreover, the energy storage revenue models in different regions of Italy have their own characteristics, with the northern region relying more on the capacity market for energy storage revenue, while the southern region is driven by the MACSE scheme.

The cooperation project between Sunac Power and IPP EP Produzione is not only an important practice in the field of energy storage, but also a crucial step in the development of energy storage in Italy.
