In 2025, Egyptian Petroleum Engineering Company (PETROJET) successfully won the contract for the second phase development project of the Hassibirkyiz oil field in Algeria, with a total project amount of 1.08 billion US dollars. This significant cooperation marks a new stage of strategic cooperation between Egypt and Algeria in the energy sector, and will also inject new impetus into energy development in North Africa.

The Hassibirkuiz oil field is located in the Belken Basin of Algeria and is an onshore oil field with a total area of 1916 square kilometers. The oil field is jointly operated by Thailand's PTTEP company (49% stake) and Algeria's national oil company Sonatrach (51% stake). The first phase of the project will achieve its first oil production in June 2022, with a target output of 13000 barrels per day. The second phase development plan will gradually increase production capacity, with a target of 31500 barrels per day for Phase 2a and 63000 barrels per day for Phase 2b.

According to the contract requirements, PETROJET will collaborate with Arkad, an Italian company, to jointly implement the project. The project construction includes the construction of a central processing facility with a daily processing capacity of 31500 barrels, the laying of 217 kilometers of oil pipelines, the construction of gathering and transportation systems, living quarters, and the construction of a new airport runway and other comprehensive infrastructure. This project is one of the largest green oil field projects in Algeria in recent years, and has important strategic significance for the country to achieve its goal of increasing crude oil production.

Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi stated that the project is fully in line with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum's development strategy of strengthening regional cooperation and promoting the expansion of Egyptian oil companies into international markets, especially in the Arab and African markets. He pointed out that PETROJET has continuously made breakthroughs in the field of major international engineering projects in recent years. In early 2024, it completed the Angola subsea system manufacturing project and delivered infrastructure components for the Ivory Coast deep-sea project to Baker Hughes and Eni Group.

As a subsidiary of the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Petrojet was founded in 1975 and is a comprehensive engineering contractor with over 45000 employees. The company's business network covers multiple countries in the Middle East and North Africa, and is expanding its service scope to sub Saharan Africa. The company was once listed in the Guinness World Records for building the world's largest double deck floating roof crude oil storage tank (with a capacity of 175000 cubic meters), and has been ranked among the top 250 contractors in the world by Engineering News Records for 14 consecutive years.

The successful signing of this project not only demonstrates PETROJET's comprehensive strength in the field of international energy engineering, but also provides new opportunities for deepening energy cooperation in North Africa and promoting regional economic development. Editor/Yang Beihua
