Two major energy storage demonstration projects in Shandong are starting construction

On the morning of October 28, 2024, the development of the new energy storage industry in Shandong Province reached a milestone moment - the Shandong Zhaoyang 100MW/400MWh all vanadium liquid flow energy storage power station and the Shandong Yuanpu 600MW/1800MWh comprehensive energy storage power station demonstration project laid a grand foundation in Weifang High tech Zone. These two benchmark projects with advanced technological paths and large scale have simultaneously started construction, injecting new momentum into local energy infrastructure construction and providing innovative demonstrations for the national energy storage industry with forward-looking technological combinations.

The 100MW/400MWh energy storage power station project in Zhaoyang, Shandong has attracted much attention for its distinctive technical features. The project adopts a hybrid energy storage technology solution of 1MW/4MWh vanadium flow battery+99MW/396MWh lithium iron phosphate battery. This design cleverly combines the dual advantages of long lifespan and high safety of all vanadium flow batteries with high energy density and fast response of lithium iron phosphate batteries, aiming to achieve the maximization of system comprehensive performance and full lifecycle economic benefits. According to the plan, the project is scheduled to officially start construction in October 2025 and is scheduled to be fully completed and put into operation by the end of March 2026. At that time, it will provide continuous and stable 4-hour peak shaving services for the regional power grid.

The Shandong Yuanpu 600MW/1800MWh comprehensive energy storage power station demonstration project, which forms a strategic synergy with it, has demonstrated a more ambitious practical blueprint through a phased and diversified technical route. The first phase of the project is to construct a 200MW/402MWh comprehensive energy storage power station, with a core configuration of 1MW/4MWh full vanadium liquid flow+199MW/398MWh lithium iron phosphate. It is planned to start construction in October 2025 and has set a compact goal of completing the installation of energy storage equipment by December 25, 2025 and connecting to the grid by March 31, 2026. The second phase of the project involves the construction of a 200MW/440MWh comprehensive energy storage power station, with further optimization of its technical ratio. It adopts a structure of 3MW/12MWh full vanadium liquid flow, 180MW/360MWh lithium iron phosphate, and 17MW/68MWh lithium iron phosphate. The two projects that started construction this time have profound industrial significance. They are not only a large-scale engineering validation of the cutting-edge concept of "hybrid energy storage", but also accumulate key data for the optimization design of future power plants by exploring the synergistic operation of all vanadium liquid flow and lithium iron phosphate; It is also a powerful promotion for the long-term energy storage technology of all vanadium flow batteries, and its large-scale application will drive the development of the entire industry chain from electrolyte to system integration.
