UAE renewable energy giant Masdar and Uzbekistan state-owned joint-stock company JSC Uzenberg have officially signed a battery energy storage service agreement to jointly develop the country's largest independent battery energy storage system - the Zarafshan energy storage project. This cooperation marks a crucial step for Uzbekistan in advancing energy transition and modernizing its power grid.
This project is an important achievement of the first phase of Uzbekistan's national battery energy storage plan. According to the plan, the Zarafshan energy storage project will be constructed in two phases: the first phase will build 300MW/600MWh energy storage facilities, connected to the Murunau substation, which can meet the electricity demand of about 1.3 million households for 2 hours at full load operation; The second phase plan aims to expand by another 300MW/600MWh to further enhance the power grid regulation capability. The entire project is expected to be put into operation in the third quarter of 2028.
The cooperation agreement was officially signed during the Abu Dhabi International Oil Exhibition and Conference, with the CEO of Masdar and the Chairman of JSC Uzenergosotish representing both parties. The joint attendance of the UAE Minister of Energy and the Uzbekistan Minister of Energy at the witnessing ceremony highlights the deep cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy.

Currently, Masdar has operated approximately 2GW of clean energy projects in Uzbekistan, with a total investment of over 2 billion US dollars. In the future, the company plans to develop another 2GW clean energy project and expand the Zarafshan energy storage project by 300MW/600MWh, which will strongly support Uzbekistan's ambitious goal of achieving 20GW of renewable energy installed capacity and 54% of power generation by 2030. The advancement of this project also reflects Masdar's leading position in the global energy storage field. In October 2024, the company launched the world's first gigawatt level 24/7 integrated solar energy storage project in Abu Dhabi, which includes a 5.2GW photovoltaic power station and a 19GWh energy storage system, capable of sustainably outputting 1GW of base load renewable electricity. The implementation of these innovative projects provides important references for the global energy transition and further consolidates Masdar's influence in the international renewable energy market.
