Recently, Huadian (Yiyuan) Pumped Storage Co., Ltd. was officially unveiled and established in Yiyuan County, Zibo City, Shandong Province, marking the end of the preliminary preparations for the Yiyuan Shiqiao Pumped Storage Power Station project with a total investment of 12.52 billion yuan and entering the substantive promotion stage comprehensively. As the largest single investment project of China Huadian Group in Shandong Province, its launch is not only a booster for local economic development, but also a strategic measure for Shandong Province to build a new power system and promote the green and low-carbon transformation of energy.
Building regional energy stabilizers and regulators
The Yiyuan Shiqiao Pumped Storage Power Station is located in Shiqiao Town, Yiyuan County, Zibo City, and is listed as a key new energy project promoted by Shandong Province. Its planned installed capacity reaches 1.8 million kilowatts, making it a super large green power bank. The power station hub project mainly consists of an upper reservoir, a lower reservoir, a water transmission system, and an underground powerhouse, with a designed rated head of up to 267 meters. The power station will mainly undertake key tasks such as peak shaving, valley filling, energy storage, frequency regulation, phase regulation, and emergency backup for the Shandong power grid by utilizing the electricity generated during low load periods to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir, and then releasing water for power generation during peak demand periods.

This feature is crucial for Shandong Province, which is accelerating the development of intermittent new energy sources such as wind power and photovoltaics. With the continuous increase in the proportion of new energy installed capacity within the province, the stable operation of the power grid is facing enormous challenges. The operation of Yiyuan pumped storage power station will effectively stabilize the fluctuations of new energy generation, improve the grid's ability to absorb clean energy, reduce the phenomenon of wind and solar power abandonment, and become the core stabilizer and flexible regulator supporting the high proportion of new energy integration into the grid.
The scale and far-reaching impact of the project
From the perspective of engineering details, the normal water level of the reservoir in the project design is 619 meters, and the normal water level of the lower reservoir is 338 meters. The huge water level difference provides ample power for energy storage and power generation. The construction of the project also means a significant change in the local geographical landscape, with its submerged area involving 10 administrative villages in Shiqiao Town and Yuezhuang Town of Yiyuan County. This requires that the project must attach great importance to the coordination of resettlement, ecological protection, and local interests during the promotion process, and achieve a win-win situation between engineering construction, rural revitalization, and improvement of people's livelihoods.
According to the announced construction plan, the project is expected to officially start construction in 2026 and be completed and put into operation in 2030.
