Under the guidance of the dual carbon target, building a new type of power system with new energy as the main body has become the core task of China's energy revolution. However, the randomness and volatility of wind and photovoltaic power pose serious challenges to the stability of the power grid. Against this backdrop, pumped storage, as the most mature and largest capacity power grid regulator in current technology, has increasingly highlighted its strategic value. Recently, the preliminary work for the feasibility study of the Shaanxi NingShaanbei Pumped Storage Power Station with a total investment of 11.55 billion yuan has been successfully completed, marking that this key project is about to move from blueprint to reality, and installing stabilizing valves for the power grid safety and new energy consumption in Shaanxi and even the northwest region.

The Ningshan North Pumped Storage Power Station is located in Ningshan County, Ankang City, with a straight-line distance of only about 70 kilometers from Xi'an, and has a superior geographical location. The upper reservoir of the project is located at the intersection of Banqiao Gou and Liyuan Gou, and the lower reservoir is situated in the Beigou River. The initial installed capacity of the power station is up to 1.8 million kilowatts, with a rated head of 370 meters. After completion, it will mainly undertake key tasks such as peak shaving, valley filling, energy storage, and frequency regulation of the Shaanxi power grid. Its annual power generation is expected to reach 1.978 billion kilowatt hours, and the annual pumped water capacity is 2.638 billion kilowatt hours.

The project was officially included in the "Shaanxi Province Pumped Storage Medium - and Long Term Development Plan (2024-2028) Project Layout Optimization and Adjustment Plan" in October 2024. Recently, the bidding process for survey and design, scientific research, and consulting services during the feasibility study phase of the project has been completed. China Power Construction Northwest Survey and Design Institute Co., Ltd. has become the winning candidate, laying a solid foundation for the comprehensive launch of the project's subsequent feasibility study, environmental impact assessment, and land approval work. According to the overall plan, the Ningshan North Pumped Storage Power Station is scheduled to be fully completed and put into operation by 2032. As a heavyweight investment in the energy infrastructure field of Shaanxi Province, this project will not only directly drive local economic growth and infrastructure construction, but also significantly enhance the flexibility and reliability of Shaanxi's power grid through its strong peak shaving and valley filling capabilities, providing key support for large-scale integration of new energy into the grid within the province. It is an indispensable part of Shaanxi Province's move towards a green, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system.Editor/Cheng Liting
