After experiencing a major power outage, Spain is accelerating its energy storage system layout. On December 12, 2025, the final decision of Spain's first round of innovative energy storage project assistance plan was officially announced, with a total of 133 energy storage projects approved. These projects have a total power of nearly 2.4 gigawatts and a cumulative capacity of about 10 gigawatt hours, with a total assistance of 827 million euros.
This tender is jointly funded by the European Regional Development Fund for the 2021-2027 fiscal year and will be launched in May 2025. The preliminary results will be announced at the end of October. In the final stage, although the total number of projects decreased by 8 compared to the initial decision, the total power and capacity increased instead of decreasing, increasing by 223 megawatt hours and 891 megawatt hours respectively, demonstrating the overall optimization of project quality. It is worth noting that there are still approximately 13 million euros in the aid pool that have not been allocated.

Dynamic adjustment of regional allocation, Andalusia receives the most funding
In terms of regional distribution, Andalusia received 351 million euros in funding for 32 projects, still the region with the most funding, but its amount decreased by 13.9 million euros compared to the preliminary list. Galicia followed closely with an increase of 4 million euros to 107 million euros in funding for its 12 projects. Castile Le ó n became the biggest beneficiary during the appeal consultation phase, receiving an additional 14 million euros, increasing the total funding for 10 projects in the region to 56 million euros. In contrast, the allocation of funds in the Balearic Islands, Asturias, and Basque Country has all decreased.
Industry giants lead the way, with prominent large-scale projects
The major energy developers have performed outstandingly in this tender. Ivildrola is leading the way with 12 projects receiving € 145 million in funding, with a total capacity of 2396 megawatt hours, accounting for 24% of the total aid. The Atlanta company ranks second, with 8 projects receiving approximately 138 million euros. Roland Corporation ranked third with two large-scale projects, including the country's largest battery energy storage project ST Palmosilla (200 MW/885 MWh), which received nearly 70 million euros in funding. Other important award winners include well-known companies such as SAMCA, Ecoener, Aquila Capital, etc. Keywords: Energy Storage Latest News, Energy Storage New Energy News

Accelerate energy transition and clarify implementation schedule
This large-scale energy storage bidding is a key measure for Spain to enhance the resilience of the power grid and promote energy transformation. All approved projects must be completed before the prescribed regulatory deadline, which (including potential extensions) is set for September 30, 2029. After the completion of this batch of energy storage projects with a total capacity of 10 gigawatt hours, it will significantly enhance the flexibility and stability of the Spanish power grid, providing strong support for the large-scale integration of renewable energy, marking a solid step forward for the country in building a new type of power system.
