Serbia's state-owned power company Elektroprivreda Srbije has officially launched the restoration and renovation project of the Frasina cascade hydropower station, aiming to increase installed capacity and extend operating life. The total value of the project is 109.7 million euros, mainly funded by loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and grants from the European Union.

The Frasina Cascade Hydropower Station has been in operation for over 70 years, consisting of four power stations with a total installed capacity of approximately 129 megawatts. The structure of this cascade system is quite unique. In addition to the two reservoirs, it is also equipped with a pumping station that can pump water from the Lisina Lake reservoir back to the Frasina Lake reservoir, making the entire system capable of pumped storage. Serbia currently has a conventional pumped storage hydropower station, Bajina Ba š ta, and plans to build two more.

This modernization renovation is expected to take 3 to 4 years, covering the reconstruction and upgrading of generator sets, auxiliary systems, and hydraulic machinery equipment. After completion, the total installed capacity will increase by 8 megawatts, ensuring stable and reliable operation of the power station for the next 30 to 40 years.

The project is primarily contracted by Energotehnika Ju ž na Ba č ka, with core equipment suppliers Andritz Hydro and Gamesa Electric. The engineering supervision is undertaken by the Swiss Serbian consortium Gruner NET Invest. Keywords: latest news on water conservancy, infrastructure projects
