Melbourne's transportation map is about to undergo a historic reconstruction.
The highly anticipated Airport Rail Link has officially transitioned from blueprint to operational phase. As the first move in this grand project, the Victorian government injected AUD 4.1 billion, approximately USD 2.89 billion, to thoroughly redevelop the Sunshine Station. This is not just a renovation of the station, but also about forging it into a super transportation hub in western Melbourne - seamlessly integrating the upcoming airport railway line with the existing urban commuting network.

Not only repairing roads, but also weaving nets
The core of engineering lies in integration and unblocking.
At present, the railway lines around the Sunshine Station are intertwined and complex, like intestinal obstruction in the city. The new project will undergo a surgical renovation of this area: simplifying the complex level crossings and freeing up valuable ground space for the airport railway. The specific amount of work is quite large: it requires laying 6 kilometers of new tracks, erecting two brand new railway bridges, and rearranging the existing passenger and freight tracks.
The future Sunshine Station will undergo a complete transformation: a longer waiting hall will welcome passengers from all directions, and two new platforms will directly connect the airport railway line with the newly opened subway tunnel and regional railway services last month. At the same time, some sections of the Sunbury Line will be rerouted and a new station will be built in Albion to complement the overall road network optimization. The entire hub upgrade project is expected to be fully completed by 2030.
The era of zero transfer between airports and city centers
The real big move lies in the airport railway connection line itself.

This connecting line will establish two key stations: one located in the eastern part of Kailar, dedicated to serving the western area of the airport and surrounding industries; The other one goes directly into the core area of the Melbourne Airport terminal. This means that passengers departing from the city center will enjoy direct railway services to the airport, completely bidding farewell to tedious transfers.
A promise that transcends the times
The discussion about building a railway line to Melbourne Airport has been ongoing since I can remember, "said Catherine King, the Federal Minister for Transport, expressing the significance of this project. In her opinion, the upgrade and renovation of the Sunshine Station will fundamentally change the way Victoria residents travel.

At present, the executing entity of the project has been finalized. A huge contract covering the diversion of public facilities and necessary preliminary works has been officially awarded to a powerful consortium consisting of McConnell Dowell, Arup, Metro Trains Melbourne, V/Line, and VidaRail.Editor/Cheng Liting
