On the evening of April 19, 2026, Liu Nannan, a resident of Weifang, Shandong, turned on the gas stove and saw blue flames as usual. What she didn't know was that the natural gas flowing into her home had quietly been mixed with hydrogen gas. On that day, China's first 100000 household scale natural gas hydrogen blending application project was officially launched in Weifang, connecting the last mile of hydrogen energy to households.

100000 households use hydrogen blended gas

The project covers 100000 households and merchants in the central urban area of Weifang, and relies on the existing urban gas pipeline network for operation. The hydrogen blending ratio can be flexibly adjusted between 0 and 10%. Residents do not need to replace any gas equipment to use it normally. Previously, the project has undergone continuous safe and stable trial operation in some areas, and the key parameters and measuring instruments of the gas supply system meet national standards.

Annual consumption of over ten million cubic meters of green hydrogen

The electrolytic water hydrogen production equipment, which is built as a supporting facility, produces 5000 cubic meters of hydrogen per hour. The total length of the urban gas hydrogen transmission pipeline is 5.2 kilometers, and the leading domestic hydrogen blending hydrogen transmission full process detection platform is put into use simultaneously. The project can consume up to 13 million cubic meters of hydrogen annually, providing a new export for large-scale consumption of green electricity such as wind and solar power. The national promotion ledger has been fully calculated

According to calculations by the National Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Center, if hydrogen is added to urban gas consumption at a rate of 10%, it can replace about 15 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, reduce carbon emissions by about 30 million tons, and save tens of billions of yuan in natural gas procurement costs. The Hydrogen into Ten Thousand Homes Project jointly launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Shandong Province in 2021, after five years of layout, Weifang has finally delivered its first answer sheet for people's livelihood.
