With the breaking of the last layer of rock and soil diaphragm, the Noviligure Railway Interconnection Tunnel in Genoa, northern Italy, has been officially completed. This is not only a dull roar, but also a strong note of the Tezo Valico di Giovi project: it successfully connects the newly built 53 kilometer Genoa Milan high-speed railway with the existing Genoa Turin main line. At this point, all four key railway connection points have been activated, and the Genoa Valley finally has a "major artery" directly connected to the national high-speed railway network.

Geological crossing within a millimeter
Behind this breakthrough is a geological surgery that takes place within a millimeter. Led by Webuild Group, with technical support from the Italian railway network and supervised by government commissioner Carlo Groya, the engineering team completed a highly challenging underground crossing in Noviligure. The connecting line originates from the Serravalle Tunnel and passes through two single track tunnels with a total length of 1723 meters (one of which is 987 meters long), approaching the existing main line at an extremely shallow burial depth - the nearest point is only a few meters away from the busy railway main line.
This type of veneer construction imposes strict requirements on settlement control. The builders had to excavate meticulously like embroidery without interrupting the existing railway operation, ultimately achieving a seamless intersection with the Turin Corridor near Noviligure.
The speed and depth of the national recovery plan
As a core component of Italy's national recovery and resilience plan, the strategic significance of this project goes far beyond the project itself. The high-speed and high-capacity line from Genoa to Milan is mostly laid underground, and its core section will become the longest railway tunnel in Italy, with a designed speed of up to 250 kilometers per hour. Including the auxiliary connection section, the entire project includes a tunnel group of about 90 kilometers, which is jointly overcome by TBM shield machines and traditional excavation methods. With the completion of the double track installation from Genoa Waltri to Sampyridana station by RFI in October, and the opening of the first 8.5-kilometer line in January 2024, this steel dragon is gradually awakening. It not only significantly compresses the time and space distance between Genoa and Milan, but also serves as the logistics backbone of northern Italy, injecting strong impetus into the economic recovery of the entire country.Editor/Cheng Liting
