On September 29, 2020, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Hefei Rail Transit Line 2 and 3 extension line was held at Yaogang Road Station on the East Extension Line of Line 2, which opened the curtain on the construction of the third phase of the Hefei Rail Transit Project. It is understood that the estimated total investment of the third phase construction planning project is 79.808 billion yuan.

The east extension of Line 2 starts at Sanshibu Station, the terminus of Line 2. After exiting the station, the line is laid along Changjiang East Road, planned Taizishan Road and planned Sidingshan Road, and ends at the intersection of Sidingshan Road and Quanxiang Road Quanxiang Road Station, the total length of the line is about 14.5 kilometers, all of which are underground lines. A total of 11 stations are arranged, namely Hucheng Road Station, Xianghe Road Station, Jinyang Road Station, Qiaotouji Road Station, Cuozhen Road Station, Xin'anjiang Road Station, Feidong Railway Station, Yujiu Road Station, Yaogang Road Station, Heping Road Station and Quanxiang Road Station.

The southern section of the South Extension Line of Line 3 starts at Guanyi Road Station. After exiting the station, it is laid along Shenzhen Road to the east. After passing through the Shenzhen Road parking lot access line, it turns to Qinglong Road and goes to Qinglong Road and Zhanqian Road intersection. The front road goes west, after bypassing Mingbang Square, turn to Jinzhai South Road to the north, go to Paihe Avenue, go down through the Yinjiang-Jihuai Project to Feicui Road, continue to the north along Feicui Road, to the Xingfuba Station, the end of the line, the line is full 11.3 kilometers long, all underground lines. A total of 8 stations are arranged, namely Guanyi Road Station, Xiapaihe Road Station, Yunxiao Road Station, Ruici Road Station, Zhanqian Road Station, Xianxia Road Station, Qingnian Road Station and Yungu Road Station.

The third phase of the construction plan includes extensions of Lines 2, 3, and 4, and the first phase of Lines 6, 7, and 8 projects with a total length of 109.96 kilometers. After the completion of the project, Hefei Rail Transit will form a rail transit network with 11 lines and a total mileage of 279.91 kilometers. In the future, it will inject new sources into Hefei's urban economic development, further alleviate traffic congestion in the central city and main roads, relatively reduce urban traffic pressure, and improve the service level and operation capacity of public transportation.
