On November 6, 2020, the Civil Aviation Administration of China approved the Fangchenggang Civil Transport Airport site selection report and agreed to use Gaoling Field as the recommended site for the Fangchenggang Civil Airport, marking a key step in the construction of the Fangchenggang Civil Airport Project.

The Gaoling site recommended by the airport location report is located in the north of Fangchenggang city, near Sihe Village, Tanying Township, Fangcheng District, 16.2 kilometers from the municipal government in a straight line, 20.2 kilometers from the highway, and moderate distance from Fangchenggang, Dongxing, and Qinzhou reasonable. The site is located in hilly and mountainous terrain, with low hills and gentle slopes. The altitude is between 17.5 and 111.7 meters. After the site is leveled, it can meet the needs of the airport's recent construction and long-term development.

The Fangchenggang Civil Airport construction project started the planning and site selection in 2014, and completed the site selection report in 2015 and determined the pre-selected site. In 2017, with the attention and support of the National Development and Reform Commission, the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the autonomous region, it was included in the National Civil Transport Airport Layout Plan and the 13th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Civil Aviation in China.

The Fangchenggang branch line airport is planned to be constructed according to the 4C branch line standard. The runway is 2,600 meters (long-term reserved to 3200 meters according to the trunk line airport standard), 8 passenger planes, the terminal building area is 8,000 square meters, and the total area is about 3,000 mu.

The person in charge of the Transportation and Energy Section of the Fangchenggang Development and Reform Commission said: After the airport site selection is approved, we will speed up the pre-feasibility study, feasibility study, general leveling, preliminary design, construction drawing submission and approval according to the work deployment of the Fangchenggang Municipal Party Committee and Government.
