A team of Chinese contractors won a $590 million deal to build a 30.5 hectare underground transportation hub in Beijing. When completed in 2024, the overpass will cover an area of 70 hectares, making it the largest overpass in Asia.
The construction team led by China Construction One Group was selected by the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Intercity Railway Investment Company to build Section 3 of the Beijing Sub-center Integrated Transportation Hub (ITH) in Tongzhou District, southeast of the capital. The total construction value of the hub is about 6.4 billion U.S. dollars. It will bring together 3 subway lines and two high-speed rail lines connecting Beijing's two major international airports and the Universal Studios theme park.
The development project started on site in November 2020 as part of a broader engineering plan to develop the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and will become the only integrated railway hub connecting the airport and the city's central business district. The design of the hub was carried out by a team composed of AREP, Beijing Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute, China Railway Design Corporation and China State Construction Engineering Group.
AREP is a multidisciplinary consultant under the French state-owned railway operator SNCF. ITH is based on research on Paris La Défense, Shanghai Hongqiao Hub and Hong Kong West Kowloon Station. The land above the hub, currently Yangtuo Village, is intended to be a commercial district along La Défense or London's Canary Wharf.

The center is designed to be invisible from the surface, except for the large glass area, it can bring daylight through all three floors, allowing the planting of underground trees. China Construction First Group is a subsidiary of China Construction Engineering, which is currently the world's largest contractor by revenue.Editor/Baohongying
