The Egyptian National Tunnel Authority (NAT) awarded Alstom a contract worth 876 million euros for the supply of 55 9-car Metropolis EMUs and an 8-year maintenance contract for the upgrade of the 44.3 km Cairo Metro Line 1.

Cairo Metro Project, Egypt

Each 9-car 1.5kvdc train of Cairo Metro can accommodate 2580 passengers. Inside, there are wide corridors, women's dedicated areas, real-time passenger information screens, dynamic route maps, video displays and video surveillance. Alstom will design and manufacture trains at its Valenciennes Petite-Forêt plant, and carry out bogie manufacturing and motor integration at its LeCreusot plant. The passenger information system will be produced at the Villeurbanne plant, while the electrical engineering will be provided by the Toulouse plant.

As part of the contract, Alstom will also provide its HealthHub predictive maintenance system, which is said to save up to 20% of preventive maintenance labor and 15% of material consumption. Maintenance will be carried out in a warehouse in Cairo and will be managed locally, which Alstom said will create jobs. The training and development plan will be launched in cooperation with the Egyptian Metro Corporation (ECM), which operates and maintains Line 1. The French government is providing funding for this and nine other related projects, with a final financing total of approximately 1.8 billion euros. This is an agreement reached on June 13, 2021. NAT also signed a 180 million euro contract with CAF for the renovation of 23 trains currently operating on Line 1 and the new Kozzika repair station. Two-year train maintenance is also included in the contract, which is funded by the Spanish Enterprise Internationalization Fund (FIEM). The renovation project will be completed in cooperation with Mitsubishi, including upgrading the traction system under the integration of CAF power and automation, installing air conditioning, and improving the aesthetics of the trains built by the Japanese company. This work will be carried out in the Kozzika warehouse, which will also be installed by CAF.Editor/XingWentao
