The total closure of the Sauerland line near Lüdenscheid will continue for several years. Not only is this a disaster for the people and economy of the region, South Westphalia is one of the most powerful industrial regions in Germany. The closure also has an impact on the entire German autobahn system, as traffic has to be diverted to equally congested routes on a large scale. West Germany is known to have hundreds of bridges, most of which were built between 1960 and 1980, and are in desperate need of updating. Many bridges along the route are in poor condition and are in urgent need of maintenance, repair or replacement. The bridge across Rahmede Valley had to close in late 2021 due to concerns about its structure. It must be completely removed and replaced.
