Bosch Rexroth is expanding its capabilities in the off-highway sector with a wide range of 700 V components for the electrification of mobile machines under the eLION name.

The Rexroth eLION platform (modular and scalable) for electrified mobile machines consists of motor-generators, inverters, gear units, software and accessories, as well as supporting hydraulic systems
Machinery manufacturers in all fields have recognized that electric drives are an important part of a future viable, sustainable product portfolio. To support and promote the electrification of off-highway machinery, the eLION announced by Bosch Rexroth at bauma 2019 is now available as a complete set of components for the electrification of mobile machinery.
During the official launch of the complete eLION product family in September 2021 in Ulm, Matthias Kielbassa, Vice President of Electrification, presented the component portfolio and highlighted the three most important features of the new product platform: scalability, robustness sex and functional safety.
Scalability due to modular design
Bosch Rexroth 700 V eLION motor-generators are available in power ratings ranging from 20 to 200 kW (peak power up to 400 kW) and deliver a rated torque of up to 1050 Nm and a maximum torque of up to 2400 Nm. Available in four sizes with different lengths and winding configurations, the product is available in either high-speed or standard-speed versions. Products are available in more than 80 configurations, meaning manufacturers have maximum design freedom when electrifying existing and new vehicle architectures.
To complement the motor series, eLION also offers inverters in various power classes with continuous current up to 300 A and high overload capability. The inverter supports DC bus voltages from 400 to 850 V.
Gearboxes with high power density for hub and central drive configurations (eGFT and eGFZ) are also an integral part of the eLION product portfolio, making compact drive units suitable for various applications.
The BODAS software module, as well as supporting hydraulic components, such as axial piston pumps, etc., are available for the entire eLION platform.
The range is complemented by other electrical components such as DC/DC converters, power distribution units, on-board chargers and high-voltage cables, allowing manufacturers to take advantage of integrated solutions regardless of the energy source (e.g. hybrid or battery) ).
Newly developed components focus on operating conditions and functional safety
According to Kielbassa, the entire development process of the eLION developers is inseparable from the company's experience in electrical industry solutions, a comprehensive understanding of the field of mobile machinery, and most importantly, the full use of Bosch's extensive expertise in the field of electric mobility. . All components are newly developed products, so no compromises are required, even in harsh off-highway operating conditions. eLION motor-generators and inverters are extremely robust, both comply with IP6K9K protection class requirements and are suitable for a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. The maximum temperature of the motor-generator is up to 100 °C. eLION components resist shocks up to 50 g and shocks up to 10 g.
Special attention was paid to functional and electrical safety during product development. Manufacturers and users benefit from the safety features of the inverters in compliance with ISO 13849.
Production in 2022
During the pilot project, OEMs such as Kalmar or Sennebogen had positive experiences with the Bosch Rexroth eLION. For this reason, Kielbassa is looking forward to the launch of the eLION platform in 2022. “Our goal is to use our technology to create a future with greater efficiency, lower noise emissions and less air pollution. We have developed the right product at the right time, and we are working on a future-proof mobile machine Helping clients strengthen their market position.”
