A major road project in Zimbabwe is being tendered. The $2.7 billion project will build a new motorway linking Beitbridge, Harare and Chirundu. Work had been done on the A4 route before but stalled for a number of reasons. The aim is to widen and improve the route to increase its capacity and improve driver safety. When complete, it will feature two lanes in either direction as well as a central reservation zone, minimizing the risk of frontal collisions.

Beitbridge is on the border with neighboring South Africa, while Chirundu is in the north of the country, bordering Zambia. The new toll road will be a key link in Zimbabwe, improving access to and from the capital, Harare, and providing a vital international link to help trade and boost the country's struggling economy. The section between Beitbridge and Harare is about 570 kilometers long and has eight tollbooths.

The project has a troubled history. The contract for this work had previously been awarded to a European firm which proved to have little experience in construction work. The batch was subsequently withdrawn from the company amid questions about why it was awarded in the first place.Editor/XingWentao
