General Electric Vernova and its partner Alghaim have completed the upgrade of four gas turbines for the 2GW Sabiya combined cycle power plant in Kuwait. This initiative aims to increase electricity production, extend maintenance intervals, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce the cost and carbon dioxide emissions per megawatt of electricity generation.

The upgrade was completed as part of a multi-year service agreement between GE Vernova and engineering, procurement, and construction company Alghaim. GE Vernova has provided advanced gas path upgrades for four 9F.03 turbines in Factory Blocks 2 and 3 to provide more energy-efficient and reliable power output to the grid.

The agreement also includes providing seven years of supply and maintenance services for these devices. Sabiya is located near Al Jahra, 52 kilometers from Kuwait City, and is the largest power plant in the country. It accommodates six GE Vernova 9F.03 gas turbines and three D11 steam turbines. The Ministry of Electricity, Water Resources, and Renewable Energy, which owns the power station, has been committed to modernizing the facility. General Electric Vernova previously upgraded two gas turbines in Block 1, resulting in a 6% increase in production and a 35MW increase in power generation.

Joseph Anis, President and CEO of GE Vernova's European natural gas power generation business, Middle East and Africa, stated that with a good record of providing long-term service contracts in Kuwait, we are proud of our strategic cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity, Water Resources and Renewable Energy, as well as Alghaim International, which enables us to provide responsive, flexible, and efficient power solutions to help meet the country's growing energy needs. According to the national strategic plan, the upgrade of the Sabia power plant highlights our ability to provide reliable electricity supply to the country through advanced technologies.

In January 2024, General Electric Vernova began operating the 766MW Topolobanpo III gas power plant in Iberdrola, Mexico. The combined cycle power plant is located in the state of Sinaloa, near the Topolobambo natural gas pipeline, and uses General Electric's 7HA.01 gas turbine.Editor/XingWentao
