BASF is a partner in the large-scale offshore wind power project called Nordlicht, its second such project. As early as 2021, BASF acquired nearly half of the shares of the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm in the North Sea of the Netherlands. The current Nordlicht wind power project is under construction in the German North Sea. This project does not rely on state subsidies and has a total installed capacity of 1.6 GW. It will become the largest offshore wind farm project Vattenfall has implemented so far.

Vattenfall is responsible for the development and construction of the Nordlicht project and plans to use its share of future power generation to supply fossil-free electricity to German customers. BASF intends to use its share in the project to supply its chemical production sites in Europe, especially the base in Ludwigshafen. BASF said that by investing in Nordlicht 1 and 2, the company will have a sufficient amount of renewable energy to implement further transformations in Europe, especially at its largest plant in Ludwigshafen. They are working together with long-term partner Vattenfall to create the conditions for achieving the goal of reducing emissions by 25% by 2030 compared to 2018.

The Nordlicht wind farm is located 85 kilometers north of the German North Sea island of Borkum and consists of two separate sites: Nordlicht 1 wind farm with a capacity of approximately 980 MW and Nordlicht 2 wind farm with a capacity of approximately 630 MW. It is expected that when the wind farm is fully operational, the total annual power generation will reach approximately 6 terawatt hours (TWh), which is enough to meet the electricity needs of 1.6 million German households. Following a final investment decision in 2025, construction work on Nordlicht 1 and 2 is expected to begin in 2026, with the wind farm expected to be fully operational in 2028.

Vattenfall President and CEO Anna Borg said offshore wind energy is an important driver of Europe's energy transition and is expected to replace fossil fuels on a large scale. She stressed that partnerships play a vital role in driving change in European industry and increasing competitiveness. Vattenfall is pleased to deepen its partnership with BASF on another important offshore wind project, thereby jointly accelerating progress towards fossil energy independence. Although the two parties did not publicly disclose the financial details of the transaction, this cooperation undoubtedly injects new vitality into Europe's energy transition and sustainable development.Editor/Zhao E
