The Japanese government has been urged to significantly triple its installed renewable energy capacity to at least 363GW by 2035 to ensure it is on track to meet its net-zero emissions target by 2050.

RE100, the Corporate Renewable energy Initiative, strongly recommends that the Japanese government set this clear and ambitious growth target in its upcoming seventh Strategic Energy Plan.

RE100 stressed that these policy proposals could create an extremely favorable development environment for the renewable energy industry and ensure that Japan is on track to pursue its net-zero emissions goal by 2050.

In order to achieve leapfrog growth from 121GW in 2022 to 363GW in 2035, RE100 recommends that the Japanese government should enhance inter-departmental coordination and adjustment, and simplify the siting, permit application and approval process for renewable energy projects.

At the same time, the Japanese government needs to review and adjust land use regulations, taking into account the natural environment and local community acceptance, to better support the expansion of renewable energy projects.

In addition, the priority development of power grid upgrading and operational optimization is also crucial. This will not only speed up the grid connection of new renewable energy projects, but also maximize the use of existing resources and avoid energy waste.

RE100 further notes that the full use of distributed renewable energy sources, including solar energy, will significantly improve the flexibility and reliability of Japan's grid.

In addition, the Japanese government also needs to develop a transparent and fair electricity pricing mechanism, through clear balance and connection fees, to ensure that generators and end users can fairly and reasonably share regulatory costs, to provide a solid guarantee for the long-term development of renewable energy.
