On September 20, 2024, the first phase of the newly-built Shantou Station, the largest and most comprehensive high-speed railway hub in eastern Guangdong, China, constructed by China Railway Guangzhou Group Co., Ltd. and undertaken by China Railway Construction Group, was officially put into use.
The newly-built Shantou Station is an important node of the national "Eight Verticals and Eight Horizontals" coastal high-speed railway, with a station yard size of 11 platforms and 24 lines, and a station building size of 100000 square meters. It integrates high-speed railways, conventional railways, intercity railways, urban public transportation, and automobile transportation, seamlessly connecting various modes of transportation. Passengers exiting the city corridor can complete indoor transfers within 2 minutes.
The station is designed with the concept of "the sea rises, the tide stands in Shantou", and the overall shape is based on the image of the sea tide, presenting the appearance of "the surging sea tide". The suspended ceiling area of the waiting hall is 39000 square meters, composed of 15189 perforated panels in a diamond shaped grid with multiple curved blocks, resembling undulating waves. The station has installed a flood lighting system with the function of "light display flow" in the form of "light tide". It uses infinitely changing color dynamic light to simulate the fluctuations of the tide, and the changes in the depth of the light color reflect the dynamic situation of the passenger flow.
The station has the country's first irregular multi curved continuous arch fully cast-in-place plain concrete canopy, which has better resistance to hydrochloric acid, corrosion, and typhoons. The ticket gate in the waiting room adopts the shape of the "Red Headed Ship" that the predecessors of Chaoshan took to Southeast Asia, conveying the marine cultural spirit of the Chaoshan people, who "brave the sea and waves when leaving, and clear the river and sea when entering", and reflecting the interior design theme of "waves surging through the sea, ships sailing around the world". The interior decoration incorporates elements of Shantou culture such as sailboats, waves, and corners, as well as Lotus Peak and the Gate of Nature, showcasing the cultural color of Shantou.
The newly built Shantou Station adopts a smart station energy-saving control system, which can automatically adjust the lighting, air conditioning, elevators and other mechanical and electrical equipment to the optimal energy consumption state based on multiple factors such as station operation time, real-time pedestrian flow in each area, temperature, indoor and outdoor lighting intensity, effectively reducing comprehensive energy consumption and operation and maintenance costs.
It is reported that after the first phase of the new Shantou Station building is put into use, the next step will be to renovate the existing Shantou Station. The renovated existing station building will be integrated with the first phase construction station building, and will be put into use simultaneously with the Guangdong East Intercity Railway, forming a combination of high-speed rail, conventional rail, and intercity functions, providing surging momentum for Shantou to accelerate its integration into the Greater Bay Area.
