Amazon has announced it has invested in three new wind energy projects in India as part of the company's broader commitment to match the electricity consumed by its operations with renewable energy and to advance progress on its climate declaration goals. The projects are among 53 solar and wind projects Amazon has launched in India, aiming to provide the country with more than 4 million megawatt hours (MWh) of new carbon-free energy. To date, Amazon has launched a total of 53 projects across India, including nine utility-scale solar and wind farms and on-site solar arrays in 44 local buildings hosting Amazon operations. These projects will provide enough energy capacity to power the equivalent of more than 1.3 million Indian homes.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Electronics and Information Technology, and Information and Broadcasting, said: "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is fast becoming a global leader in the clean energy transition. Investments by companies like Amazon are accelerating that progress." He added that clean energy is not only about sustainability, but also central to India's goal of generating 50 percent of its electricity from non-fossil fuels by 2030.
Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for Power, New and Renewable Energy, also stressed the importance of investing in wind and solar projects to achieve renewable energy targets and ensure energy security. Avinash Shekhar, head of Energy and Water strategy at AWS APJC, said Amazon is committed to driving a carbon-free energy transition in India and around the world to combat climate change at scale. Since 2020, Amazon has invested in more than 600 solar and wind projects globally, including more than 50 in India, as part of its climate declaration commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2040. The latest projects signed by Amazon include CleanMax Koppal 100 MW wind farm in Karnataka, BluPine Solapur 99 MW wind power project in Maharashtra, and JSW Energy Dharapuram wind power project.
