On February 13, 2025, Jiangyin Guyana, the first new foreign trade route along the the Belt and Road in Jiangsu Province, China, was officially opened. At Jiangyin Port, a foreign cargo ship loaded with 110000 tons of "bauxite+manganese ore" from Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, successfully arrived at the port and held a grand inaugural ceremony.
Guyana signed the the Belt and Road Initiative in 2018, becoming the first country in South America to join the initiative. The opening of this new route not only highlights the deepening cooperation between China and Guyana in the economic and trade field, but also further expands the trade exchanges between China's Jiangsu Province and countries along the the Belt and Road.
The Deputy Director of Jiangyin Maritime Bureau introduced at the ceremony that with the continuous release of the "golden benefits" of the 12.5-meter deep-water channel in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the shipping capacity of Jiangyin Port has been significantly improved. Up to now, Jiangyin Port has opened routes with 100 ports from 21 the Belt and Road countries or regions, forming an extensive international shipping network.
The new route of "Jiangyin Guyana" spans 12 time zones with a total mileage of about 13000 nautical miles. It is one of the most distant intercontinental trade routes along the the Belt and Road in China. The opening of this route not only reduces logistics costs and improves trade efficiency, but also injects new vitality into the economic and cultural development of the two regions.
The successful opening of this new route is an important measure for Jiangsu Province of China to actively respond to the national the Belt and Road initiative, and also an important achievement for Jiangyin Port to deepen international cooperation and expand the international market.
