Recently, the People's Daily Online International Channel reported that the cumulative power generation of China aided Hujibaji Hydropower Station in Burundi has exceeded 250 million kilowatt hours. The total installed capacity of the hydropower station is 15 megawatts, and it is under the general contracting of China Electric Power Construction Hydroelectric 14th Bureau. It started construction in October 2018 and passed the completion acceptance in 2022, successfully generating electricity.
The completion and operation of Huji Baji Hydropower Station has greatly improved the lives of the villagers in Lutumo Village, Bulundi Lumengei Province. Villager Sajir Ndayishimiye purchased an electric grinder, and due to stable power supply, his business is thriving. Welder Egid Kuru also expressed that frequent power outages in the past made it difficult for him to complete his work on schedule. Now that the power supply is stable, he is grateful for the hydroelectric power plants built with Chinese assistance.
After the completion of the project, the 14th Bureau of Hydroelectric Power will provide a two-year warranty and three-year technical support for the power station. The power stations are all built according to domestic standards, with a high degree of automation. The annual average equivalent utilization hours are over 22 hours, and the failure rate of key equipment is less than 0.5%. It effectively covers the electricity needs of two-thirds of the population in Burundi City and one-third of the population in Rumonge Province.
In addition, during the construction phase of the project, a large number of local workers were employed, accounting for over 80% of the total construction workforce. During the operation period, 30 fixed positions were provided for a long time, and through the "work for training" model, hundreds of local employees mastered professional skills such as equipment operation, machinery, electrical and gas maintenance. Many personnel were promoted to technical backbone.
Huji Baji Hydropower Station has not only significantly improved the power supply capacity of Burundi, but also promoted the development of local economy through technical training and employment opportunities. This project not only establishes the brand image of China Hydropower 14th Bureau in Africa, but also strengthens the bridge of friendship between China and Burundi.
